Instructions

ALA 106/109 students are REQUIRED to register for two observations per semester that is linked to your class.

HSSP observations are only open to students currently enrolled in ALA 106/109.

If you are promoted from a waitlist, make sure you drop one of your other observations if you have more than the limit.  Do your best to sign up during the initial sign up period when you have online access.  If you do not have two observations by the close of sign ups on Monday, January 22, please email HSSPObservations@umich.edu with your class schedule for help with finding observations that fit with your schedule.

Winter 2024 – Important Observation Dates

Note: Spring Break is Saturday, Feb. 24 to Sunday, March 3

Check your calendar to see if you will be away from campus during Break or any dates occurring before or after the scheduled break before scheduling an observation during this time period. If your plans change after your access to drop online through the scheduling observation website ends (Monday, Jan. 22), email HSSPObservations@umich.edu as soon as possible so we can notify the host of the cancellation to their schedule.

Open Online Registration for ALA 109 Students (January 18 at 10:00 p.m. to January 22)

  • Thursday, January 18, 2024, 10 p.m. – Registration opens online for ALA 109 students
  • Monday, January 22, 2024 – Registration closes online for ALA 109 students; returns to view-only
  • End of January – Observations begin for the semester
  • Tuesday, April 23, 2024 – Last day of most HSSP observations (a few options may be available Final Exam Week)

Registering for Observations

Once you register for an observation online during Open Registration (January 18 at 10:00 p.m. to January 22), you will receive an email either confirming you are registered or notifying you the observation is full and you are placed on the waitlist.

You can check your account on the website within 10 minutes to find out if you are registered (click Sessions heading -> dropdown My Observations ->.

If you need to register, cancel, or reschedule an observation after online Open Registration has closed on January 22, email HSSPObservations@umich.edu with the 1) name of the observation, 2) date and time of observation, and 3) the type of change you would like to make to your observation registration. After Open Registration ends on January 22, hosts are notified of their observation schedule for the entire semester. If you email HSSP Observations that you would like to register late or make a change to your registration, the HSSP staff will contact the host to confirm the host is still available to accommodate the update to their schedule, and then HSSPObservations@umich.edu will email you to confirm if the update to your observation schedule is complete.

Waitlist

Once you register for an observation that is closed and you are placed on the waitlist, you will receive an email in about 10 minutes that lists your waitlist position. If you no longer want to be on a waitlist, please remove yourself. Please note that there is a small chance that a student will withdraw from an observation to allow an opening for a waitlist student, so we would suggest you think of another plan if a spot does not become available. If an opening does become available, the first person on the waitlist will automatically be registered and receive a notification email. Once you are selected from the waitlist and automatically registered, it is your responsibility to drop the observation if you no longer want to attend.

If you are far down on a waitlist, consider withdrawing from the waitlist and selecting an open observation. If you are not #1 or #2 on a waitlist, there is a very small chance that a spot will become available and that you will become registered for the observation.

Never arrive at an observation site that you are on the waitlist for; only the registered student(s) can participate in the observation.

Attendance

  • If you are a no-show for an observation or cancel for an non-emergency, this will impact your ALA 106/109 grade and you are not permitted to reschedule.
  • Mark your observation sessions on your calendar because it is important so that hosts will continue to want to work with HSSP.
  • If reflects negatively on our program when a student does not follow through with a scheduled commitment.
  • HSSP does not permit no-shows for observations. Unless you are ill or have an emergency, if you cancel the day of your observation, you are also considered a no-show.
  • Rescheduling observations after the website has locked is very limited to only an emergency or unavoidable conflict to prevent continuous disruptions to the host.

Preparing for Observations

  • Wear comfortable shoes because you will most likely be standing throughout the entire observation
  • Bring water to your observation site to stay hydrated during the time you are there
  • Check dress code and if you need to bring a lab coat by reading the observation description online
  • Check if there are any handout links with the online description to prepare for your observation
  • We suggest you attend an observation with a couple of questions about the profession, training, or practice ready to ask the host if there is time for discussion during the observation. Attending a job shadowing observation with questions demonstrates to the host you are interested in the observation and are not just passive.
