Panel Discussion: Supervising Student Employees

Tuesday, 1/13, 11:00 am-12:00 pm

The Student Employee Engagement Committee and the Management Development Committee are excited to be jointly sponsoring this panel discussion about supervising student employees in the library.  We have five great panelists:

  • Peter Cerda (Data Curation Specialist — Michigan Publishing)
  • Lauren Day (Consultation and Discovery Librarian — Learning and Teaching)
  • Julie Herrada (Curator — Special Collections Research Center)
  • Yulia Sevryugina (Chemistry Librarian, Interim Math Librarian — Research)
  • Lauren Siebert (Physical Collections and Access Supervisor — Access and Fulfillment)

The panelists will be discussing these general topics:

  • Understanding the general scope and responsibilities of supervising student employees in the library.
  • Understanding approaches to onboarding and supporting new student employees, and how these approaches might vary a bit based on the job.
  • Gaining insights into how to support student employee growth and learning, based on the kinds of things student employees often look for in a job.
  • Learning new approaches to talking with student employees about their work when things are going well, and when improvement is needed.

There will also be time for questions and conversation. We encourage all supervisors of student employees to attend, and everyone is welcome.  The event will be recorded.
