Keynote Address

Metacognition: The Key to Equity and Excellence for All Students!
21st Century students come to college with widely varying academic skills and motivation levels. Most students expend very little energy attempting to learn and rely on memorizing information just before examinations. This interactive workshop will help attendees understand why many students expend very little energy on learning and have difficulty achieving student learning outcomes. Cognitive science research based methods that can be used to facilitate conceptual, transferable learning will be discussed. The session will present specific learning strategies that have resulted in significant increases in student effort and improvement in student learning in undergraduate, graduate, and professional school environments.

Keynote Workshop

Increasing Student Motivation: Strategies that Work
Motivating today’s students to actively engage in learning activities proves challenging for most faculty. Very often millennial students do not respond as did students in the past to extrinsic motivators such as bonus quizzes and extra credit assignments. However, as James Raffini presents in 150 Ways to Increase Intrinsic Motivation in the Classroom, when the psychoacademic needs of students are met in creative ways, student motivation soars. This very interactive workshop will engage faculty in a discussion of addressing student needs for autonomy, competence, relatedness, self-esteem, and enjoyment in order to significantly increase student motivation.

About the Conference

Archive Details about previous Enriching Scholarship conferences (since 1998)

Enriching Scholarship is a free, multi-day event held annually the first full week of May all across the Ann Arbor campus, and focused on improving teaching, learning, and research through the effective integration of technology and pedagogy. Hosted every year since 1998 by the Teaching and Technology Collaborative, more than 100 workshops and seminars are presented by faculty, instructional designers, and academic technology experts.

Presenters describe compelling new teaching practices and learning technologies, lead hands-on demonstrations, or review their experiences applying learning technologies and offer suggestions for attendees who might be considering new ways to approach their classes.

Enriching Scholarship begins each year with a well-attended and popular Keynote event. A poster fair highlights the work of the recipients of the annual Provost’s Teaching Innovation Prize and recipients of CRLT or LSA ISS grants to enhance teaching and learning. The poster fair is directly followed by a Keynote Address typically focused on current trends and challenges in teaching and learning, as well as strategies for meeting those challenges.

If you are interested in learning more about Enriching Scholarship, or have an idea for a topic you might like to present, you can email teachtech@umich.edu anytime throughout the year. A more formal call for proposals also goes out in December to all U-M employees with an instructional component to their appointments.
