Verifying the Accuracy of Citations Generated by AI Chatbots

Tuesday, 9/29, 12:00 pm-12:30 pm

Generative AI chatbot tools like ChatGPT or U-M GPT can suggest sources to be cited in academic works. They can also summarize and create a bibliography of those sources. Unfortunately, those AI-suggested articles may not actually exist, or their citations may contain errors.

Citing a fake article, even inadvertently, significantly undermines the trustworthiness of the content and the academic research process as a whole.

In this short lunch and learn, we’ll discuss how to verify the accuracy of citations. This process can be used if a generative AI tool has suggested some references for you, or if you are concerned that content you are reading might be AI-generated.
