In this workshop:

• You will learn about two major United States Census datasets: the decennial census, done every 10 years, and the ongoing American Community Survey.
• You will explore the different demographic and housing related questions asked in these two surveys, and how these have changed over time.
• You will see how the data can be mapped from the state all the way down to the census tract or even smaller level, which is roughly equivalent to the neighborhood level.
• You will use a couple of different tools for mapping these datasets, including Social Explorer (a subscription available to UM users) and making your own highly customizable maps in ArcGIS Online with data downloaded from NHGIS.

No previous experience with Social Explorer or ArcGIS Online is required.
