With current research showing that traditional classroom environments fail to meet the needs of today’s students, it can feel overwhelming designing learning experiences so that all students can succeed. Traditional classrooms often rely on rigid structures that limit learner agency and overlook the diversity of students’ strengths, challenges, and ways of engaging with content. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) offers a framework to help instructors design flexible learning environments that anticipate the varied needs of all learners from the start rather than responding with one-off accommodations. This session introduces UDL as a lens for rethinking teaching and planning, empowering educators to create conditions where every student can access meaningful learning experiences without increasing the burden on the instructor.
