Georeferencing is taking a digitized historic map (or other inherently spatial thing that cannot yet be used in its spatial context) and assigning it to the place in space where it belongs, so that it can be viewed in the context of other geospatial elements.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to turn a historical map into usable GIS data in ArcGIS Online. We will locate, import, and georeference a scanned historic map, then digitize features from the map to create new spatial data. 

No previous experience with historical maps or georeferencing is required. Other options for georeferencing besides ArcGIS Online will also be discussed.
